So to start it back up, here's a little project I made tonight.<br />
<br />
I want to create the look of enamel without the cost of starting up a whole new hobby. With that end in mind, I've tried several different experiments. Tonight I tried using embossing powder on a silver plated pewter pendant. Here's the pendant before and after embossing it:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSz_IZTULg66sl93GPFhx2pgDuqoH5GaQ-8mlTLguVpGSi1HMq44wAzAhxA2ytPQh0171GLn_43jBN3IQFkVQn5l_cv1ZG7uZLpVEp_iSdc7vhC8Ug1xDCNKTCaXi1kYVxI4dHEfVuMbjk/s1600/P1070748.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="223" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSz_IZTULg66sl93GPFhx2pgDuqoH5GaQ-8mlTLguVpGSi1HMq44wAzAhxA2ytPQh0171GLn_43jBN3IQFkVQn5l_cv1ZG7uZLpVEp_iSdc7vhC8Ug1xDCNKTCaXi1kYVxI4dHEfVuMbjk/s320/P1070748.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I rather like how it turned out! The powder tends to settle like real enamel does, giving the piece highs and lows of color. I did two layers each of the dark and light greens to get a greater depth of color. Because I was wondering whether the enamel powder was translucent or opaque (this is a different brand than the powder I use on my zibirdies), I layered the light green over the dark green. In the future, I'd layer them in the opposite order if I want the dark green to have a more pronounced edge.<br />
<br />
I'm going to wear it around for the next few days and see how well it holds up, then I'll update this post with my findings. If it works well, then I hope to be able to use it on other jewelry projects! :)<br />
<br />
<br />
Update 06/21/13: I've been wearing the pendant quite a bit, even sleeping with it on, though that turned out to be incredibly uncomfortable as even jewelry hollies are awfully prickly! lol Anyway, the "enamel" is wearing off on the raised portions of the pendant, so I need to find a way to seal it. I've decided to re-do the embossing powder on both leaves, then try a different sealing technique on each leaf. One will have a regular clear varnish, the other will have a clear epoxy. My guess is that the epoxy will give me a better result. We shall see!<br />
<br />
Update 06/22/13: I picked up the epoxy last night, Mod Podge Dimensional Magic. I watched a few YouTube videos on how to use it and since it looked pretty straight forward, I went ahead and tried it on the larger of the two leaves. It's very thick (in fact, you don't even need "walls" to hold it in place), so I ended up drawing a line down the center of the leaf and using a toothpick to pull it into the points. Though when I applied it the epoxy was cloudy, this morning the leaf was nice and glossy with a hard finish and slightly domed look. I also painted the smaller leaf with Delta Ceramcoat Gloss Interior Varnish last night. It is also glossy and hard, but not domed. I'm going on a trip for a few days and I'm planning on wearing the necklace to see how the two finishes hold up.HollyIggyMomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15250063373716691923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3838369589966280095.post-75171522578927734842012-01-16T12:58:00.000-08:002012-01-16T14:11:48.871-08:00Mosaics: the beginning!Not much to report; I've been busy and lazy, alternately. Still, last night I sorted out the mixed bucket of tesserae that I bought the other day. I bought these cheap little tiles so that I could experiment and find out if I liked making mosaics without getting heavily financially committed to making them by buying the much more expensive glass/ceramic tesserae and the proper tools to work with them. You can cut these little guys with just ordinary scissors!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_zzdhQw6fvfOGkmY88q6PKu8DhYKGH610LteoFknbUGaEBKZCSXD5tZHOgNYxmmfjN0n376A2p0UKx9L0TOkmQhpHgMMwfXlv3qCixFDsIYvybqanyjcAZAISzvcns-Fjmtm2O3hHdi1j/s1600/mosaic+tiles+for+kids+-+fix.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_zzdhQw6fvfOGkmY88q6PKu8DhYKGH610LteoFknbUGaEBKZCSXD5tZHOgNYxmmfjN0n376A2p0UKx9L0TOkmQhpHgMMwfXlv3qCixFDsIYvybqanyjcAZAISzvcns-Fjmtm2O3hHdi1j/s320/mosaic+tiles+for+kids+-+fix.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>There turned out to be 12 colors, including black(ish) and white. I decided I'm going to do just a very simple geometric pattern this time, since I don't want to put in a lot of work on something I might screw up. I bought a little wooden box to cover...after all, we all know I'm addicted to little boxes! It's a little frustrating because the box only fits 10x7 tesserae, so my design options are limited. After messing about a bit, I gave up and decided to do this pattern:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3N7B29GPOK-8KwFeNKyVd_cLkAlokessftc8N_I_ia4ZbA4_dVdYfV_2xtoN9DHTKCW9DFeehw3hu0TTY0RLVZws0FGYEKn2mH7rzPwCEN3Xr86b9-RXoD9FIOgK1CARurIaUXSO5KaVm/s1600/mosaic-pattern-%25282%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="224" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3N7B29GPOK-8KwFeNKyVd_cLkAlokessftc8N_I_ia4ZbA4_dVdYfV_2xtoN9DHTKCW9DFeehw3hu0TTY0RLVZws0FGYEKn2mH7rzPwCEN3Xr86b9-RXoD9FIOgK1CARurIaUXSO5KaVm/s320/mosaic-pattern-%25282%2529.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>Edit: Here's a pic of the tesserae all glued down. I messed up early on, so had to adjust the pattern slightly, and I had to use half tiles at the bottom edge to fill in, but it was either that or make the grout gaps uneven horizontal to vertical. Anyway, so far, so good!<br />

I was, however, a total dork and forgot to get pictures of almost everything. Aaaargh! So, I shall post a picture of the one item I actually remembered to photograph; meet Genova, a Zibitty I made for my niece, Lisa:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8-taIuF8Lb-k_r9UF76WkF99RHfTVjBbza4p9pg4g1imTWpZ29T7IEMPW92C2DIgUCFBTOdyk9yx2qpfSMm4vYHwV-OeMEYspibO-8H2b_e2JFaKyouguNnUzd74E3VG-NcISetOQ7NjA/s1600/Lisa%2527s+Genova+%25281%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="319" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8-taIuF8Lb-k_r9UF76WkF99RHfTVjBbza4p9pg4g1imTWpZ29T7IEMPW92C2DIgUCFBTOdyk9yx2qpfSMm4vYHwV-OeMEYspibO-8H2b_e2JFaKyouguNnUzd74E3VG-NcISetOQ7NjA/s320/Lisa%2527s+Genova+%25281%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Zibitties are always a challenge to make since they're so tiny! They're just a fraction of the size of a Zibaby. It's hard to get everything smooth and blended properly when my tools barely fit into the areas needing to be smoothed. Still, I really like making Zibitties because they are just so stinkin' cute when they're done!<br />
<br />
<br />
Next subject: Mosaics!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXhfa35-F0qI_dM-h7_WtCxbQvJg3G_cPOR922kE5t2tcw0Zrq88Yw5lG94yKNuAIXGdz4UVrJT846vUjfvA4WDE03bTqpwojfQhV3uUWP-JlO1QAbfF8Ob_YWYC2TFuS1XTYQwjdsoGDv/s1600/Deer_hunt_mosaic_from_Pella.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="311" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXhfa35-F0qI_dM-h7_WtCxbQvJg3G_cPOR922kE5t2tcw0Zrq88Yw5lG94yKNuAIXGdz4UVrJT846vUjfvA4WDE03bTqpwojfQhV3uUWP-JlO1QAbfF8Ob_YWYC2TFuS1XTYQwjdsoGDv/s320/Deer_hunt_mosaic_from_Pella.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>Due to an Amazon gift certificate from my wonderful sister Valerie and a night filled with insomnia, I am now the proud owner of three books on making mosaics! I've always loved the pictures I've seen of Roman and other ancient mosaics and I've wanted for years to try my hand at making them. Each book I ordered focuses on different styles of mosaics: one is on traditional techniques, one discusses using polymer clay, and the other is on making "micro" mosaics. I'm probably the most curious about that last one. Here's a 13th century micro mosaic. Look at the incredible detail! Can you believe this mosaic is only about 17" high? Amazing!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimJ6M31I73jtc6NAFqJ-ZDuVlyNSM3Xz2YtYzfXHwYGV0EiKkeNJTjoGkBUgsJoA23YgXHbnuAWpUrcdaDgIOAJOFOBWVTo_h275pNGcMjpZYpppHKpQrZ38NDepFlaHFouBBTf75eUxTW/s1600/416px-Mary_%2526_Child_Icon_Sinai_13th_century.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimJ6M31I73jtc6NAFqJ-ZDuVlyNSM3Xz2YtYzfXHwYGV0EiKkeNJTjoGkBUgsJoA23YgXHbnuAWpUrcdaDgIOAJOFOBWVTo_h275pNGcMjpZYpppHKpQrZ38NDepFlaHFouBBTf75eUxTW/s320/416px-Mary_%2526_Child_Icon_Sinai_13th_century.jpg" width="222" /></a></div>It wasn't until the 1800s that micro mosaics became popular in jewelry, but I'm definitely going to try mixing my love of jewelry with this new artform...I'll let you all know how it goes!HollyIggyMomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15250063373716691923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3838369589966280095.post-18610127467197826252011-11-29T15:41:00.000-08:002011-11-29T15:43:40.318-08:00Not dead, just busy!Life's been a bit hectic over the last little while! I've been trying to make a bunch of jewelry, zibies, and zibabies for the holiday shopping season. This has mostly been accomplished, with some unanticipated downtime due to tendonitis in one of my wrists. Still, I managed to get a respectable amount of items created! Below are some pics of a few of my favorites. You can see all of them on my <a href="http://facebook.com/HollyIggyMom" target="_blank">FB page</a>, <a href="http://www.sablegreyhound.com/" target="_blank">website</a>, and <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/SableGreyhound" target="_blank">Etsy shop</a>. Oh, and if you check out my website, please let me know if you find any typos, bad links etc, since I just revamped the whole site! (Only my jewelry website was updated. If you wander off into my dog website or my SCA one, they're still the same.)<br />

<br />
I've always loved the belt on my inspiration portrait:<br />

It was the first time I'd ever seen a cameo in 1500s Italian jewelry, which was really exciting for me because I love seeing how the same themes/styles are repeated in Italy through the centuries. Cameos were popular during Roman times, usually depicting deities and emperors/empresses. They phased in and out of use over the centuries, but they never disappeared completely. Even though I can't see who is depicted in this cameo, it seems to have the classic styling of a Roman cameo. For my belt, I chose a mother-of-pearl cameo and set it into a gold plated setting:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiq_wqk_n6tXe3BBBGXGwpaZaRsQ_Z3ovyF1y0Go7fd86EkxkRQ2BsuLxFKO7GGzgwrbF7qT9DDf_RDs-E4zw4fRpXK-Q2ez5HL5Yjwj9d9b6Jk7doIbJNwLMS5eYIyvsV5NZajvnCu1bwc/s1600/Bronzino%2527s+c1550+Portrait+of+a+Lady+project%253B+belt+%25287a%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiq_wqk_n6tXe3BBBGXGwpaZaRsQ_Z3ovyF1y0Go7fd86EkxkRQ2BsuLxFKO7GGzgwrbF7qT9DDf_RDs-E4zw4fRpXK-Q2ez5HL5Yjwj9d9b6Jk7doIbJNwLMS5eYIyvsV5NZajvnCu1bwc/s320/Bronzino%2527s+c1550+Portrait+of+a+Lady+project%253B+belt+%25287a%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Another fun element in this belt are the two little faces on either side of the cameo. I like to think that they are lion's heads, since the symbol of Venice is St. Mark's winged lion:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWgT52ZA8f-EacH3glQ2cHxfvtqWgLyd-fJ9eFWZvqi07m_TEXnfeEwP7pUZwvRJRyElz1N2Lw1gWqpW2gqGafxWrKenmL0Tir-zs7kr8KNP8P_j8zu5jdi4yh1P84LNJ7045TLPjmQ_au/s1600/St.+Mark%2527s+Lion.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="197" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWgT52ZA8f-EacH3glQ2cHxfvtqWgLyd-fJ9eFWZvqi07m_TEXnfeEwP7pUZwvRJRyElz1N2Lw1gWqpW2gqGafxWrKenmL0Tir-zs7kr8KNP8P_j8zu5jdi4yh1P84LNJ7045TLPjmQ_au/s320/St.+Mark%2527s+Lion.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>A while ago, good friend of mine gave me a pair of earrings that were little jeweled cat heads, saying they reminded her of my zibies and wondering if I could use them in my jewelry. With a few modifications, they fit in perfectly with this project! I cut the earring posts off and drilled a hole in the back of each head so I could pass the beading wire through them. I love the way they match the overall style of the belt and the way they help me match the feel of the portrait. Besides all that, I think they add such an adorable touch! (Just look at their tineh toofers!)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiduVtytdbMGSaqmbDXnDNBRE5hlCorLK2NARl3d3p1JuNv3bqoxgOpKqkKXer_K4_omk3hRinGiMhP-GgH53ybHcOtEiC5n7yFv_MQPUbtV1RWHn2IlAj6t427BwwXdrHidlg3sAN-Lav-/s1600/Bronzino%2527s+c1550+Portrait+of+a+Lady+project%253B+belt+%25287c%2529+-+Copy.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiduVtytdbMGSaqmbDXnDNBRE5hlCorLK2NARl3d3p1JuNv3bqoxgOpKqkKXer_K4_omk3hRinGiMhP-GgH53ybHcOtEiC5n7yFv_MQPUbtV1RWHn2IlAj6t427BwwXdrHidlg3sAN-Lav-/s320/Bronzino%2527s+c1550+Portrait+of+a+Lady+project%253B+belt+%25287c%2529+-+Copy.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
None of the pictures that I could find of this portrait showed the whole tassel at the end of the drop. This is frustrating because I wasn't sure what to make. Finally, I found a picture that showed probably half of it, so I had something to work with! I still couldn't tell if the tassel was made from metal, metal thread, or silk thread, so I decided to just have fun and make something that looked similar but let me play with beaded netting, something I don't get to use often enough, in my opinion! :) I netted metal beads and Swarovski crystals around a German crystal drop for the top of the tassel, then made a kind of multi-layer frame for the chain part to hang from. I incorporated red Swarovski crystals into the outside layer of chain to mimic the gems on the portrait's tassel. Here are a few pics of the construction of the tassel:<br />
<br />
All the bits and parts, including the completed netted crystal drop:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYxjB6a6sTbfR3iOmEcoAy48vpP_mEFSi14Yz_QBbLlvFMk4x-8-k6CNKI6T9aAvfyUMBRQfDf6EY31LtLWjQV2TAVZ0sLlLzHOWhmmsd01dNFN-IhYDNOndH41J3TroNa2CK-0-JLzBNJ/s1600/Bronzino%2527s+c1550+Portrait+of+a+Lady+project%253B+belt+%25281%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYxjB6a6sTbfR3iOmEcoAy48vpP_mEFSi14Yz_QBbLlvFMk4x-8-k6CNKI6T9aAvfyUMBRQfDf6EY31LtLWjQV2TAVZ0sLlLzHOWhmmsd01dNFN-IhYDNOndH41J3TroNa2CK-0-JLzBNJ/s320/Bronzino%2527s+c1550+Portrait+of+a+Lady+project%253B+belt+%25281%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
The first, inner layer:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTEDx1VUh_3xM0-FLkYEYl02mU3u7hWd87OmkHUYjJZUOJJpJWpO5BJoYYu_ZoTEGj0hHLrJyIEosZkGGy65xEOKg_qwsHlHKmgOPxusjrA_AgsqrwBnNRaXZ2hsXyceziW0DgLqNj6vjP/s1600/Bronzino%2527s+c1550+Portrait+of+a+Lady+project%253B+belt+%25282%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTEDx1VUh_3xM0-FLkYEYl02mU3u7hWd87OmkHUYjJZUOJJpJWpO5BJoYYu_ZoTEGj0hHLrJyIEosZkGGy65xEOKg_qwsHlHKmgOPxusjrA_AgsqrwBnNRaXZ2hsXyceziW0DgLqNj6vjP/s320/Bronzino%2527s+c1550+Portrait+of+a+Lady+project%253B+belt+%25282%2529.JPG" width="182" /></a></div><br />
The second, middle, layer. This is made up of several simple chandelier findings layered into a circle arrangement:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfnABIBxu2y4XYSevPIV-Pwt8GaIq7AqOW80212pPFMB83VxjTFHugfBnlGshFNCXBlPbueSkHF_008yzH1oMtG45Juo7pRIKCTD1SduaesgGMSCKpXpnGIRABWG8Y4SN0kPf_6Ix_k48t/s1600/Bronzino%2527s+c1550+Portrait+of+a+Lady+project%253B+belt+%25283%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfnABIBxu2y4XYSevPIV-Pwt8GaIq7AqOW80212pPFMB83VxjTFHugfBnlGshFNCXBlPbueSkHF_008yzH1oMtG45Juo7pRIKCTD1SduaesgGMSCKpXpnGIRABWG8Y4SN0kPf_6Ix_k48t/s320/Bronzino%2527s+c1550+Portrait+of+a+Lady+project%253B+belt+%25283%2529.JPG" width="245" /></a></div><br />
The third, outside, layer. Here I attached chain around the edges of a round filigree finding. I also added Swarovski crystals to the edges of the filigree:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCYZVA4dycfZHWs1s2yfRkFMKzl8kGY2y9B2EgUfbNatn8xV_3uNbe33dbqIYcUzAWIHtWzFnrbBSVcaCwAc7hc7VwM64OJ7oUipWP_OOdlbVeJEVGOrZ_OLPNxmGBsZG7AsKKz9y4exmc/s1600/Bronzino%2527s+c1550+Portrait+of+a+Lady+project%253B+belt+%25284%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="319" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCYZVA4dycfZHWs1s2yfRkFMKzl8kGY2y9B2EgUfbNatn8xV_3uNbe33dbqIYcUzAWIHtWzFnrbBSVcaCwAc7hc7VwM64OJ7oUipWP_OOdlbVeJEVGOrZ_OLPNxmGBsZG7AsKKz9y4exmc/s320/Bronzino%2527s+c1550+Portrait+of+a+Lady+project%253B+belt+%25284%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Threading the three layers together along with the netted drop:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgI_Fl5VbvOIn3Av2SR3hTtlY2cwxU9CMYuQEmFUr4dyFvaBdaHuXgYnqRfyAX0pJUmepr_vUCUb_rvo1FzEC6lGqshz6JBWBs9T0YPWkjZSMno3wNHVkNwMkkA7-eJvXL9C8z6FI1Za79c/s1600/Bronzino%2527s+c1550+Portrait+of+a+Lady+project%253B+belt+%25285%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="319" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgI_Fl5VbvOIn3Av2SR3hTtlY2cwxU9CMYuQEmFUr4dyFvaBdaHuXgYnqRfyAX0pJUmepr_vUCUb_rvo1FzEC6lGqshz6JBWBs9T0YPWkjZSMno3wNHVkNwMkkA7-eJvXL9C8z6FI1Za79c/s320/Bronzino%2527s+c1550+Portrait+of+a+Lady+project%253B+belt+%25285%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
The completed tassel. There are several things that I'd do differently if I make another chain tassel like this, but overall I'm pretty happy with it!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbw9Tzhb_NO3wzujWhKj1SJesZEA4isfF7Zixzst_iXN9EF0alHqc_ziCPH-LGG_fqM4ycISlme4NOzItVXaRqdGxoHKWkyQR2yKoM4jv9CRJTjpVPsyD09ihD3He3YNto7A9aRvn-tyMn/s1600/Bronzino%2527s+c1550+Portrait+of+a+Lady+project%253B+belt+%25286a%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbw9Tzhb_NO3wzujWhKj1SJesZEA4isfF7Zixzst_iXN9EF0alHqc_ziCPH-LGG_fqM4ycISlme4NOzItVXaRqdGxoHKWkyQR2yKoM4jv9CRJTjpVPsyD09ihD3He3YNto7A9aRvn-tyMn/s320/Bronzino%2527s+c1550+Portrait+of+a+Lady+project%253B+belt+%25286a%2529.JPG" width="231" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>The drop and waist portions were pretty straightforward stringing. I used bead caps and findings with Swarovski crystal to approximate the feel of the portrait's belt. I really love the way this belt turned out! It has a wonderful, heavy feel to it, and a ton of sparkle without being gaudy. I'm hoping Noelle and I get my new gown done before Collegium so I can wear it!<br />

When I entered, I neglected to take into account the effect the Fall and Winter weather has on my pain levels, which in turn effect how much physical activity (such as sewing, jewelry, & other handwork) I can accomplish. If my pain dictates I can only do a couple of things a day, then my business orders must come first! I'm still planning on keeping up on the other entrants' progress, and hopefully I'll still be able to get something new done before Solstice, even if it is only some new accessories. I was planning on continuing to post my crafty projects to this blog even after the ACC was concluded, so I'm just looking at it this way: that phase of the blog is just being started a little earlier!<br />
<br />
So, I hope my followers won't stop checking in on my little crafty world...I still hope to be able to share some of my inspiration with you and read your comments! :)HollyIggyMomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15250063373716691923noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3838369589966280095.post-51877516927000914622011-10-08T15:55:00.000-07:002011-10-10T01:38:03.008-07:00ACC: Earrings mockupI've always liked Maria di Cosimo's earrings in this portrait:<br />

Simple but beautiful! I have all the findings to make these except for the "diamonds." So, while I'm waiting for mine to show up (though, alas, I could only afford cubic zirconia!), I consoled myself by "making" them in Illustrator, replicating as closely as I could the findings I'll be using:<br />

Many portraits, when looked at closely, show some sort of spacer between each pearl. Most likely many of these "spacers" were knots in the stringing cord, which are still used today for both security (in case the thread broke) and to keep the pearls from rubbing on each other. However, in quite a few instances the spacers seem to be tiny metal beads, such as in the 1544-45 portrait of Eleonora of Toledo with her son Giovanni de' Medici (by Agnolo Bronzino; Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence):<br />

</style> <![endif]--> Diana was created for the Province of Arrows' Flight (<a href="http://www.arrows-flight.org/" target="_blank">http://www.arrows-flight.o<wbr></wbr>rg/</a>) as the prize for the winner of their Insurrection event's Arts & Sciences competition. In honor of the PAF, I named her after the goddess Diana (the goddess of the hunt) and I took her colors from their device (Purple and Gold). To make her head I used a special metal powder that anneals to clay, giving the clay an actual metal coating. Isn't she pretty? :)<br />

(Text and picture from this <a href="http://www.medievalists.net/2011/09/08/dozens-of-medieval-finds-reported-in-this-years-treasure-trove-of-scotland/">article on the 2010-2011 Scotland Treasure Trove Report</a>.)<br />

<strong>Swivel ring and mount for a medieval hunting leash</strong><br />
<strong><a href="http://www.medievalists.net/2011/09/08/dozens-of-medieval-finds-reported-in-this-years-treasure-trove-of-scotland/medieval-keys/" rel="attachment wp-att-25166"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-25166" height="338" src="http://www.medievalists.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/medieval-keys-450x338.jpg" title="medieval keys" width="450" /></a><br />
</strong><br />
This is an unusual complete example of a swivel fitting for a dog leash, comprising a freely rotating mount with attachments for two separate leashes. Such leashes were used to control dogs during hunting where the swilling element would prevent the leashes being fouled or caught. The fitting is rather small and is presumably for a pair of scent hounds or dogs for small game such as hare. Hunting held a particular place in medieval culture, putting an emphasis on particular behaviour and virtues. It was in short, a social setting where an individual could show themselves to advantage and this objects reflects this social setting; finely decorated, it is an object to be admired and to reflect the status of the owner as much as it is a utilitarian object.HollyIggyMomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15250063373716691923noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3838369589966280095.post-21226389814741926682011-08-24T20:58:00.000-07:002011-08-24T20:58:22.321-07:00ACC: Flag FanI am so annoyed! I very carefully worked up a pattern so I could make a "proto flag fan," only to find out that neither my printer nor my Dad's has ink! Argh! Well, I've gotta do <i>something</i>, so I'll post my little pattern and the extant fan I based it on:<br />

She is just amazing when it comes to painting miniatures! <i>Verre </i><span class="st"><em>é</em></span><i>glomis</i><span class="st"><em>é</em></span> (gilded glass) refers to a technique where a subject is painted onto the back of a clear cabochon (glass or rock crystal), then the whole back of the cabochon is gilded. The trickiness becomes apparent immediately: unlike most paintings, where you paint the background, then block out the main areas, then add detail, in <i>verre </i><span class="st"><em>é</em></span><i>glomis</i><span class="st"><em>é</em></span> you have to do everything in reverse! I'm going to have to choose a very simple subject if I'm going to do this project, since I have very little experience with painting in general.<br />

I've been out of town so much this month (I've only been home 5 days total!) that I haven't been able to get any ACC stuff done. Well, as a token effort before I drag my sleep hiney to bed, here are some pics of the bits I just bought to make rings:<br />
<br />

This is a self portrait of Sofonisba. She's painting Campi painting her...could that be why she seems to have TWO left hands? She seems to be painting herself through him.<br />

Can I just say that I am so grateful that I have the help of the fabulous Noelle for the patterning of my bodice? Anyone who has ever tried to pattern for themselves knows that it's a painful, inaccurate experience that usually ends up wasting time and materials, so it is costuming GOLD to find a friend who knows how to whip up a pattern! I can't start on the gown for a little while, but it's a relief knowing that the bodice pattern is waiting for me when I'm ready! :)HollyIggyMomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15250063373716691923noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3838369589966280095.post-91059255941844425352011-08-06T19:24:00.000-07:002011-08-09T21:21:57.449-07:00ACC: Blueberry Buttons!Noelle and I were discussing what I want to do for my ACC project. Many aspects were discussed, as well as what I thought I needed to start with: patterning the kirtle. Makes sense, right? So what did I end up doing first? Buttons! Noelle was kind enough to <a href="http://adventuresofawannabeseamstress.blogspot.com/2011/08/tufted-buttons.html">show me</a> how to make the awesome little fringed buttons for the zimarra, which turned out looking like little blueberries! Love!<br />

I feel rather guilty that I haven't been doing some things I really should be doing at home, but while I've been here I've at least gotten something almost finished! I'm giving my friend Astrid a zibellino for her wedding. She loves skulls, so her zibie is going to be a bit different than my usual "flavor" of zibie:<br />

Next I'm going to use an antiquing medium to give the clay a bone-like appearance, then I need to add the crystals to the eye sockets, file the teeth smooth, then attach the whole shebang to the pelt (a champagne/silver mink). After that I'll just need to assemble and attach the collar and he'll be done! :)HollyIggyMomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15250063373716691923noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3838369589966280095.post-75077965274889374142011-06-29T17:25:00.000-07:002011-06-29T17:25:52.749-07:00Zibie fox: head form<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>I picked up the head form for the zibie fox today! The guy was nice enough to chop off the neck for me and round it off. He was all excited that we girls (Gypsy went with me) weren't grossed out by his work and we ended up talking to him for a bit. Anyway, in case you're wondering what a taxidermy form looks like, here are some phone photos:<br />

<br />
<br />
--<b>Zibellino fox:</b> I've tried several times now and I just can't seem to get a vintage fox with high enough quality, yet low enough price, to be feasible for a zibellino. So, after poking around the internet and looking at some taxidermy sites, I thought, "Why not use a taxidermy head form inside a modern garment-tanned fox pelt?" The form would give the head a hard shape I need to attach my zibie head onto, and if it works well I can finally make zibie foxes for those people who've asked for them! I ordered a head form (over $30! yikes!) and I'm supposed to be able to pick it up tomorrow! I'm hoping I can use glue and small tacks to attach the pelt's head to the taxidermy form, I'm thinking that there will be an ugly bit/gap under the chin though, so I may have to cover it with cloth? trim? We'll see how big the gap is. I'm also going to try attach a large alligator clip under the chin so he can clip to his own tail/leg like the vintage stoles. More on this project as I play with it!<br />
<br />
--<b>Zibellino marten:</b> In the 1547 inventory of King Henry VIII's "Quenes Juelles", there is an intriguing mention of a clock in the head of a zibellino: <i>"Item a lytle square Coofer coured with nedell worke having in the same two sables skynnes with aheade of golde being a clocke in each eye a rocke rubie and about the color three smalle table rubies and iij small table dyamoundes with iiij fete of golde."</i> Now, how can I pass that up??? I do have a sable pelt, but he's rather small so I'm opting to use a really nice stone marten that I've been saving make a zibie for myself. Martens are closely related to sables, so I think he'll work nicely. I found a pretty little watch face that I think won't be too distractingly modern:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqGjs3URhMzhNdyvr_L21q8_5wlYqNBoJalIq2wA0gKT76o7aOopVtNCZp2rqA0dFvKwyJs1sG0EOgG7TZTEC7jlgbBmSr2VLqGLpuoDuPPpUxN8mdmRfwF1ZnNhCqRnktrgUxpe-lpg0R/s1600/watch+face.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqGjs3URhMzhNdyvr_L21q8_5wlYqNBoJalIq2wA0gKT76o7aOopVtNCZp2rqA0dFvKwyJs1sG0EOgG7TZTEC7jlgbBmSr2VLqGLpuoDuPPpUxN8mdmRfwF1ZnNhCqRnktrgUxpe-lpg0R/s200/watch+face.jpg" width="200" /></a></div> The idea is that I'll plant it right in the middle of his forehead (since the inventory doesn't mention where the clock is). I figure that if I cut out the area where the watch back will be, then insert the watch face, I can then change the battery just by removing the zibie head from the pelt!<br />
<br />
<b>Venetian flag fan:</b> If I can talk Noelle out of a chunk of her parchment, I'd like to use it to make the "flag" portion of the fan. I'll have to rely heavily on my scribal friends (you know who you are!) to help me make it pretty, then I'll attach it to a handle possibly made with one of these two choices:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBiGYxHjjo4KvPjHcCznn6IWFkW_gsXcUtOL5ibzunDK2F-Wz8cuxatG2YBr2pbMoMqGlKoBNDwz58AC8RkVs6ODGPuiFmLuPSRPGcZkyV5dkXuCOBhMlRe17EsFCmm6pDOcKbLcMwNxJB/s1600/spiral+dowel.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBiGYxHjjo4KvPjHcCznn6IWFkW_gsXcUtOL5ibzunDK2F-Wz8cuxatG2YBr2pbMoMqGlKoBNDwz58AC8RkVs6ODGPuiFmLuPSRPGcZkyV5dkXuCOBhMlRe17EsFCmm6pDOcKbLcMwNxJB/s200/spiral+dowel.jpg" width="133" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxVNPBVIQ2uMpa8epxA_l_hoOcosmGKiRPY-4KoBIIKB92FHYeJCbk3TM958xcmqxIWoYJByzNA52dfZKU84X_MBaMALTSdidGlp4CZd00c_bsiIyOY1YEAS4AT1eMnXF8XtCt0fNTqHD0/s1600/filigree+dowel.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxVNPBVIQ2uMpa8epxA_l_hoOcosmGKiRPY-4KoBIIKB92FHYeJCbk3TM958xcmqxIWoYJByzNA52dfZKU84X_MBaMALTSdidGlp4CZd00c_bsiIyOY1YEAS4AT1eMnXF8XtCt0fNTqHD0/s200/filigree+dowel.jpg" width="133" /></a></div>I'm going to try my metal powder on the wood since it's supposed to be able to anneal onto it as well as the clay; that way I'll have a "metal" handle! I also might attempt to make a feather fan as well...heaven knows I have plenty of feathers kicking around, as well as an excellent source for them!HollyIggyMomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15250063373716691923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3838369589966280095.post-52488701890062406422011-06-28T11:36:00.000-07:002011-08-06T23:22:52.171-07:00Taking the plunge into the world of sewing...I do not like sewing. I can put a sailor to shame with the lovely expressions that fly from my mouth. That said, I've decided that it's time to really put that to the test and make sure, for reals, whether I'm going to spend the rest of my life bribing others to do my sewing or if I will suck it up and do it myself. It's kinda like when you say, "I hate onions" and people say, "Oh, but you just haven't had onions the way <i>I</i> cook them!" So you try them, and maybe their particular flavor of onion isn't as foul, but it's still foul...or you taste, then think, "Wait, <i>those </i>onions I like!"<br />
<br />
I happen to know some really wonderful seamstresses. I continually find myself standing in awe of their mad sewing skillz! One in particular, my fabulous friend Noelle, has suffered through my sewing angst in the past and, amazingly, she's still willing to teach me!<br />
<br />
Now, to the meat of the matter: Recently the Artemisian Costuming Challenge was issued. The challenge is to create at least 4 layers of costuming, from the skin out, before the end of the year. I talked to Noelle and she is willing to help me with the sewing aspects...she is a GODDESS!!! I figure that when I feel my head's going to explode or I may get violent, I'll attack the other aspect of the challenge: accessories! I <i>like</i> making accessories! Jewelry is my forte, but my little zibellini are fast catching up. :) So, here's my proposal:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;"><b>I</b><b>nspiration portrait:</b> Portrait of a Lady by Agnolo Bronzino c1550</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjX3u9seAu0th_Zc97Rb9NEXZlfsE_hgmcJxlG-KMmS3d0X9e0n07albFsDyIqjuz4KUHF1HbkyNlWZG5dkYIdwGydUzypyo7JALDKX-219ey7SevDH3D-cf-4GVKg38DtfYhKLNUJEuY1h/s1600/1550%253B+Portrait+of+a+Lady%253B+Agnolo+Bronzino%253B+Galleria+Sabauda%252C+Turin.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjX3u9seAu0th_Zc97Rb9NEXZlfsE_hgmcJxlG-KMmS3d0X9e0n07albFsDyIqjuz4KUHF1HbkyNlWZG5dkYIdwGydUzypyo7JALDKX-219ey7SevDH3D-cf-4GVKg38DtfYhKLNUJEuY1h/s320/1550%253B+Portrait+of+a+Lady%253B+Agnolo+Bronzino%253B+Galleria+Sabauda%252C+Turin.jpg" width="247" /></a></div><br />
<b>1st Layer (underwear):</b> A linen camacia (solid neckline) with white blackwork (is that the correct way to phrase that?). I'm trading making jewelry for the embroidery. Linen from stash.<br />
<br />
<b>2nd Layer (main garment):</b> A side-back lacing kirtle. Yellow brocade from stash.<br />
<br />
<b>3rd Layer (outer layer):</b> Zimarra (thank you for reminding me of the correct term, Crystal!). Blue cotton velvet from stash.<br />
<br />
<b>4th Layer (an accessory):</b> "An" accessory??? Haha! I'm definitely planning on at least the girdle belt, necklace, and probably earrings (even though she's not wearing any).<br />
<br />
<b>Extras!:</b><br />
Zibellino (stone marten, gold annealed head, clock in forehead...yes, I can document the clock!)<br />
Linen drawers (with more white blackwork on them, possibly with a cheeky saying in Italian)<br />
Stockings (either in linen or silk)<br />
Garters (trade?)<br />
Underskirt<br />
Veil & veil pins<br />
Bracelets <br />
Headband<br />
Partlet<br />
Fan (Venetian flag fan)<br />
Pockets<br />
Chopines (probably the least probable to get made, but one that I covet greatly!)HollyIggyMomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15250063373716691923noreply@blogger.com6
